On All sessions, choose Start new session. Create new session has three steps: Configure, Add participants and Select issues.

Step 1: Configure

  • Session name: required, up to 100 characters. It starts as the project’s name and today’s date.
  • Session configuration: Public or Private. Anyone who can open the project can join a public session. A private session is only for the people you add in step 2.
  • Estimation values: Standard Fibonacci (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21) or Time estimates (0, 30m, 1h, 2h, 4h, 1d, 2d, 3d, 1w). To change the cards, remove values or type a new one and press Tab. Values above 500 can’t be added. A changed set shows as Custom.
  • Timer values in seconds: up to two countdown timers, each from 10 to 60 seconds. The moderator starts them in the session. They are for display only and never stop the voting.
  • Jira Board Selection (company-managed projects): the board whose backlog the session uses. It starts on the board you opened the app from.
  • Set this configuration as my default preference. Tick it to start your next new sessions with these settings, including the people you add.

Then choose Proceed.

Step 2: Add participants

  • Moderator (required): the one person who runs the session. A session has one moderator.
  • Participants (private sessions): the people who vote.
  • Add observers (private sessions): tick it to add Observers, who watch without voting.
  • One person can hold only one role. For a public session you choose only the moderator: everyone who opens the session joins as a participant.

Choose Proceed, or Go back to change step 1.

Step 3: Select issues

  • Estimation field: the Jira field the agreed estimate is saved to. You can pick Story point (company-managed projects) or Story point estimate (team-managed projects), Original estimate, the board’s own estimation field (marked Board default), or another number field. Use Original estimate with the Time estimates deck. If a field is missing or a save fails, see Set up the estimation field.
  • Include issues: All from backlog adds every issue in the board’s backlog. Select specific issues lets you tick issues one by one.
  • Filter: search by issue name, or type a JQL query such as IssueType = Story AND "Story Points" IS EMPTY. See Filter issues with JQL.
  • Enable Subtasks: list sub-tasks too.
  • View selected issues: review your selection and untick anything you no longer want to estimate.
  • Issues in a Done status are not listed.

Then choose Start session.
