SprintPoker is planning poker in your Laya.net workspace: everyone picks a card in private, the cards are revealed at once, and the agreed estimate is saved where the work lives. It works like SprintPoker for Jira, and a session of Jira issues can even be played from both apps at once.
Where to find it
- SprintPoker in the rail opens the SprintPoker overview for your workspace, at
/{handle}/poker: your sessions, From your boards, filters and Create Session. - Estimate with SprintPoker in a board’s top bar, on Laya boards and connected Jira boards, starts a session for that board. If a session is already running on it, you can continue that one instead, or start a new one.
- Start SprintPoker on the workspace home opens Create Session.
- The My SprintPoker sessions card on Home lists the sessions you host or join in your workspaces. A session of another workspace opens from its Laya.net link.
- Start estimation session in Ready or Not starts a session with the issues you just scanned.
A single card doesn’t need a session: its panel offers a quick estimate.
Who can start a session
By default, Owners, Admins and Members can create and run sessions. People with the Reader or Guest role take part in sessions but can’t host them. An Owner can change who hosts on the workspace’s Permissions tab, where the permission is Host SprintPoker sessions, under Planning.
SprintPoker runs in team workspaces: a personal workspace has no one else in it. In a personal workspace, SprintPoker’s pages say SprintPoker works in team workspaces and offer Create a team workspace. A team workspace made from there opens on SprintPoker (pick a board to start with and that board opens instead). They list the sessions made there before under Sessions in this workspace, and those keep working, for everyone in them. Start SprintPoker on the workspace home and a board’s Estimate with SprintPoker stay, with starting a new session switched off and the reason: SprintPoker works in team workspaces. Create a team workspace to run sessions with your team. Its cards have no quick estimate.
If your role can’t host, the ways to start a session stay where they are but are switched off, with the reason: Your role in this workspace can’t host SprintPoker sessions. The workspace owner can allow it in Settings → Permissions. That covers Create Session, New session under From your boards, Start SprintPoker on the workspace home, Start estimation session in Ready or Not, and starting a new session from a board’s Estimate with SprintPoker, which still lets you continue a session already running there. Opened directly, the create page says You can’t create SprintPoker sessions in this workspace. You can still take part in the sessions you are invited to.
Create a session
- Choose the session type and name itPoker is a live session where everyone votes together. Async Poker lets everyone vote in their own time: see Async sessions. Everyone in the session sees its name, guests included.
- Choose where the items come fromTyped-in items, A Laya board or Jira issues: see the table below.
- Check the settingsThe defaults suit most sessions. They are described below, and the room’s Session Settings changes them later.
- Pick the issues, then startSearch and filter the board’s issues, or type the items in. Save as Draft keeps the session to start later; Start Session opens the room.
| Source | What you estimate | Where final estimates go |
|---|---|---|
| Typed-in items | Items you type or paste, one per line. No board needed, and nothing is created in Laya.net or Jira | Nowhere else: the results stay in the session |
| A Laya board | Cards from a board in this workspace | Each card’s Estimate |
| Jira issues | Issues of a Jira project already mirrored into this workspace | Jira, as the moderator who saves them |
Boards connected to Azure DevOps, GitHub, GitLab or monday.com can’t be estimated in SprintPoker yet.
No Jira project in the workspace yet? Choose Jira issues and press Connect Jira: you approve the connection at Atlassian and come straight back to the form, where the Jira site’s projects are listed. Pick one and Laya.net brings it into the workspace in the background (Mirroring) while you carry on with the settings; its issues appear on the Issues step as they arrive. Connecting needs the Add connections & mirror boards permission, and without it the form says who can.
Already have Jira projects in the workspace? Under them, More projects from the connected Jira site lists the ones not in Laya.net yet: pick one and it is brought in the same way, in the background, while you carry on. Someone whose role can’t bring a project in sees who can instead.
The issue picker filters by Estimation, Readiness, Type, Status, Label and Epic. For Jira issues, its Advance Search switch finds issues with JQL. The search runs in Jira as you when your own Atlassian account can; otherwise, for a member of the workspace, it runs through the workspace’s Jira connection, within the Jira projects the workspace mirrors.
Session settings
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Private Session | Only invited participants can join this session | Off |
| Auto reveal votes when all players voted | Shows all votes as soon as everyone has voted | On for Poker; not available for Async Poker |
| Auto-start Estimation | Skips the Start Estimation step: voting opens as soon as an issue is selected | Off (Poker only) |
| Join as Observer | You join your own session as an observer, so you facilitate without voting | Off |
| Allow Updating Personal Estimates | Participants can change their estimates after revealing | On (Async Poker only) |
| Estimation Field | Where final estimates are saved. A Laya board saves to each card’s Estimate, and typed-in items keep their results in the session. For Jira issues the host chooses the field: the one the board estimates with, another field of the Jira site that the host can see in Jira, or Session only. Laya.net lists the site’s fields as the host sees them in Jira, or, when the host’s own Jira access doesn’t work, through the workspace’s Jira connection | The field the board estimates with, marked (Recommended); Session only when a Jira board has none |
| Lane Values | The cards in everyone’s hand. Choose one of the presets, or keep a Laya board’s own scale | Fibonacci, or the board’s own scale |
| Enable AI Features | AI hints in the room | On |
| Abstain only on hidden issues | For a session of Jira issues: someone Jira says can’t see an issue gets a placeholder and can only abstain on it. Only the host can turn it off | On |
Add Participants adds members of the workspace, and Assign Participant Roles sorts them into Moderators, Participants and Observers. You always stay a moderator of a session you create. People outside the workspace join with the session’s link while its Guest access is on. A new session starts with it off, unless a workspace admin chose otherwise: see Join a session and invite guests.
The last part of the form, Sharing, says where the session is played and sets who can find it. Where it is played is not a choice: a session of Jira issues is shown in Laya.net and SprintPoker for Jira wherever SprintPoker for Jira is connected for its Jira site, and is Laya.net only everywhere else (see Play one session with SprintPoker for Jira). Who can find it is Only people you invite for typed-in items, and Everyone in this workspace for a board’s session; a session shown in both apps starts at People who can see its Jira projects, so SprintPoker for Jira lists it for the people who can see them too.
The SprintPoker overview
- Each session card shows its type (Poker or Async), its state (Draft, Active or Finished) and whether it is Public or Private. Join Session opens it.
- From your boards lists the boards you can estimate, says where each one saves estimates, and starts a New session on one.
- The filters narrow the list by name, Access, Type, Status, Board and Where (Laya.net only, or available in both apps).
- Sessions created in SprintPoker for Jira on the Jira site connected to this workspace are in its own list, with its other sessions. Shared with you lists sessions from other workspaces, and the other sessions created in SprintPoker for Jira that you can open. Both lists keep themselves up to date while the page is open.
- The ⋮ menu on a card offers the host and moderators Mark as Finished, Re-select Issues and Session Settings (for a session created in SprintPoker for Jira, Mark as Finished only). The host and workspace admins also get Delete Session and Erase Session: see Delete or erase a session.
