Workflow validators, post functions and JQL functions

Attach Laya WorkflowOS rules to Jira workflow transitions as a validator or a post function, and use the app's extra JQL functions in Jira search.

Last updated

Laya WorkflowOS adds two items to Jira's workflow editor, for both company-managed and team-managed projects. Each uses one of your rules: a validator checks the rule's conditions, and a post function runs the rule's actions.

In the workflow editorWhat it does
Laya WorkflowOS ValidatorBlocks the transition unless the selected rule's conditions are met. The person sees your error message.
Laya WorkflowOS ActionRuns the selected rule's actions when the transition happens.

Add one to a transition

  1. Build the rule firstIn Laya WorkflowOS, create the rule whose conditions (for a validator) or actions (for a post function) you want. For example, a rule with the condition Fix versions is not empty.
  2. Edit the workflowIn Jira, open the project's workflow, select the transition, and add a validator or a post function.
  3. Choose the Laya WorkflowOS itemPick Laya WorkflowOS Validator or Laya WorkflowOS Action. In Rule, choose your rule.
  4. Write the message (validators)In Error message (optional), write what people should do, for example "Please set Fix Version before moving this issue to Done." If you leave it empty, people see "This transition is blocked by a workflow rule."
  5. Publish the workflowSave and publish the workflow in Jira, then try the transition on a test issue.

Extra JQL functions

The app adds three JQL functions that work in Jira's own search, boards and dashboards, and in the app's rule and search JQL. Each takes a JQL query in quotes, and works with in and not in.

FunctionFindsExample
subtasksOf("query")The sub-tasks of the issues the query finds.issue in subtasksOf("project = ABC AND fixVersion = 1.0")
parentsOf("query")The parents of the issues the query finds.issue in parentsOf("status = Blocked")
linkedIssuesOf("query", "link type")Issues linked to the issues the query finds. The link type is optional.issue in linkedIssuesOf("key = ABC-1", "blocks")

The query inside runs as you, so it only reads issues you can browse. It reads up to 200 issues, and a function returns up to 1,000 related issues.
