Backlog, sprints and epics

Boards show what is happening now; the backlog, sprints and epics pages are where you plan what happens next. Each board has its own planning pages, reachable from the Backlog and Epics entries in the board's view strip and from the board menu under Plan.

The board backlog

A board's backlog page has three tabs: Sprints & backlog, Submissions and Archived sprints. Sprints & backlog is where unscheduled work lives and where you organise it against sprints; Archived sprints keeps completed iterations out of the way without losing them.

Sprints

Each board has a Sprints page listing its iterations, with pages to create a new sprint, view a sprint's detail, and edit it. Scrum boards are made for this rhythm — the Scrum template is described in the product as “Time-boxed sprints with backlog grooming.”

• On the board, group by Sprint to see the active iteration as a swimlane, or filter by sprint in the filter bar.
• Cards carry a sprint field, settable at creation or later from the card.
• Automations can react to sprint boundaries with the When a sprint starts and When a sprint ends triggers — for example, moving incomplete work to the next sprint.
• Sprint metrics such as Velocity and Sprint burndown live in Insights.

Epics

Epics collect related cards into a larger body of work. Every board has an Epics page (also reachable from the view strip), and on the board you can group by Epic to read each stream in its own swimlane, or filter to a single epic. Cards show an epic link chip when they belong to one.

Epics also connect upwards: an epic can be attached to an initiative, so portfolio pages like the Roadmap and Initiatives can roll delivery progress up from the boards.
